enthusiast, participate in the Huntsville Public Library’s 8 th Annual Friends of the Huntsville Public Library Art Contest this spring. This contest is open for students aged 5-18, and the deadline to submit is Friday, February 23, 2018. Winners will be formally announced at the Artwork Unveiling Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2018. Come to the library to pick up your entry form and contest rules today! Get fit while you sit with Sittercise! Start 2018 off with a new exercise program being offered from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning January 9th at the Huntsville Public Library in conjunction with Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Sittercise is designed to help those who are aging and/or dealing with chronic and other illnesses. It focuses on strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, endurance, and overall improved function. Please consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Liability waivers are required to participate and are available from the instructor. The class is free and open to adults ages 18 and older. Bring your ancestry “puzzle pieces” to the Huntsville Public Library’s free genealogy workshop, “Working Your Genealogy Puzzle,” and let us help you put it together from 3 pm to 5 pm Thursdays beginning January 11, 2018. Johnnie Jo Dickenson will guide participants researching their family history using investigative tools such as online databases, resources, and the library’s extensive genealogy collection. Come to Story Time – a fun early literacy program for kids 5 and under. Join us for interactive stories, songs, rhymes, and crafts. The early literacy practices featured each week help build the foundation for a lifelong love of reading and learning. For parents and caregivers, story time offers an opportunity to experience early literacy practices in action, discover great books and resources for home use, and socialize with other parents after Story Time. Wednesday and Friday sessions share a theme with something new each week. Sign-up is not required. Story times are held on Wednesdays and Fridays at 10:45 a.m.

February is traditionally known as Black History Month and to celebrate that fact, the Brown Bag Lecture Series features Dr. Bernadette Pruitt, associate professor of history at Sam Houston State University, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, February 23 at the Huntsville Public Library. Dr. Pruitt will speak about some of the primary documents she used for her book and their importance in genealogy in her presentation "Documenting the Other Great Migration to Houston, 1900-1950."
The first Black woman to earn a PhD in History from the University of Houston, she obtained her undergraduate and master’s degrees from HBCU Texas Southern University. Attendees may bring a brown bag lunch. Lunch time begins at 11:30 a.m. and the lecture will begin at noon at the Huntsville Public Library. Beverages will be provided, and admission is free. Do you have children ages 2 or under? Then Mother Goose Lapsit is a story time designed for you! Held on Mondays at 10:30 a.m., enjoy a half-hour of developmentally appropriate play featuring stories, songs, and rhymes. This program introduces little ones to the story time experience and is perfect for their language development and developing vocabulary. Sign-up is not required.

Do you suffer from chronic pain? Learn how to ease your symptoms through stress management, exercise, and nutrition. The 2 ½ hour classes starting at 1 p.m. on Monday, January 29 will also feature how to get a good night’s sleep and how to deal with depression. Hosted by the Huntsville Public Library, the series of six classes will occur weekly through March 12. The classes are sponsored by the Texas A&M Center for Population Health and Aging and the Houston-Galveston Area Agency on Aging. The workshops are free and limited to 16 participants. Get in on the fun! Play Texas 42 at the Huntsville Public Library. Texas 42 is a dominoes game similar in style to bridge and spades. It is held from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays in February at the Library. Studies show playing dominoes can be beneficial for the mind as attention to detail and strategy are essential to play. So, come to the Library each week and strategize your winning moves. We’ll supply the dominoes and refreshments. Games will be played weekly if 4 or more players register. This program is for adults 18 years and older. Pilates student teachers from the SHSU Department of Dance will teach a weekly class from 5:45 PM to 6:30 PM starting Monday, February 19 through April 30th in the Community Room at the Huntsville Public Library. The Library is partnering with the SHSU Center for Community Engagement for this program. Pilates classes build strength, flexibility, and lean muscle tone with an emphasis on lengthening the body and aligning the spine. Benefits include production of long, lean, strong overall muscle tone that doesn't create bulk, overall slimming, greatly improved flexibility and increased mobility, even in just a short space of time. Please bring your own towel or mat. Consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program. Liability waivers are required to participate and are available from the instructor. One-hour classes will be held Tuesdays in February. Morning classes will be held from 10 - 11 am and evening classes will be from 5 - 6 pm. The course will cover subjects such as making a new file, data entry, cell formatting, formulas, and manipulating a finished table. A library card is required to participate in the classes.
